What does a shift lead and supervisor do?
A shift lead is the on-the-floor leader during a shift. They direct associates, open or close their department, keep stocking and recovery on track and handle customer issues. Supervisors take on more of the scheduling, training and reporting.
It is the first step into store management for many associates.
Duties and responsibilities
- Lead associates during the shift
- Open or close the department and hand over to the next shift
- Assign tasks, check progress and step in to help
- Keep merchandising, stocking and recovery to standard
- Answer customer questions and escalate issues
Skills and requirements
- At least a year of retail or customer-facing lead experience
- Comfortable directing peers and giving clear instructions
- Reliable, punctual and flexible on shifts
- Basic computer and point-of-sale skills
- Able to stand for long periods and lift up to 40 pounds
Schedule and shifts
- Opening, mid and closing shifts
- Some leads cover more than one store
